The amount of Bitcoin mining power that reacted to ERCOT's plea for energy saving by shutting off their equipment was above 1,000 megawatts. "This constitutes virtually all of Texas' industrial-scale Bitcoin mining demand and enables the return of over 1% of the overall grid capacity for usage by retail and commercial users."
ERCOT encouraged Texans to minimize their power use on Monday to avert massive disruptions. A catastrophic cold storm in February 2021 caused widespread disruptions. ERCOT forecasts crypto miners to raise electricity consumption by six gigawatts by mid-2023, enough to power every Houston house.
